An Introduction to Spitalfields Studios

Tucked away on an East end side street, just minutes from the cutting-edge Whitechapel Gallery, are two blocks of artists studios hidden within the Tower Hamlets Business Development Centre. This is Spitalfields Studios (part of Spitalfields Arts Facilities and Education): a community of local artists, everything from graphic designers, film-makers, writers, dancers, architects, music producers, photographers, sculptors, painters, illustrators and installation artists.

I’ve recently joined the studios as a curator and exhibition administrator. My initial impression is that there is heaps of creative energy and the potential for some exciting projects and collaborations to emerge! I also love that the majority of artists are East London based and invested in the community here.

For example, the first exhibition I assisted with was MUSA by Christopher Lane, at the local Brady Arts Centre – a community space managed by Tower Hamlets council.

Christopher also teaches weekend art classes at Crisis in East London – a charity working with people affected by homelessness.

A couple weeks back, we ran a drawing sale with Katie Horwich and Danièle Lamarche in the studio courtyard – an open air space that was formally a Jewish Luncheon Club, part of the Great Garden Street Synagogue. Some of the original synagogue plaques are still dotted around the space, a reminder of the historical diversity of this part of London, which still continues today (during the event we enjoyed the intermittent sound of calls to prayer from the East London Mosque, just across the road from the studios).

Coming up soon we have a two-day exhibition of new paintings by Biddy Peppin and guest artist, Angela Allen. Observations is about ways of seeing and will be up in the Spitalfields Studios gallery on the 6th and 7th July, part of the Whitechapel Gallery First Thursdays tour. (Link)

Watch this space for more on our exhibitions and events, and new blog posts from our community of artists!
